Nail Health: Fingernails and toenails are primarily composed of a substance called keratin. Keratin is a protein that also found in skin and hair. Nails grow from the matrix, the area under the cuticle at the base of the nail, in a fashion that the newer cells replace the older cells which become hard and compacted as they grow out of cuticles. The average growth rate for nails is 0.1 mm a day. Age, time of year (nail grows faster in summer rather than winter), activity level, heredity, disease, sex, hormone imbalance, poor nutrition, lack of proper vitamins and minerals and the aging process all affect nail growth. Fingernails grow faster than toenails as do nails on a person’s dominant hand (the hand you write with). Men’s nails grow more quickly than women’s nail as well.
