Vitamins:

Vitamins are substances that are found in the foods we eat, and your body needs vitamins in order to function properly. Vitamins help your body grow and develop, function properly, resist infection, and process food into energy.  Vitamins also strengthen your bones and muscles.

According to the USDA, 60% of Americans do not meet the “5 a day” minimum servings of fruits and vegetables. Vitamins in the form of supplements can help fill in the gaps and protect you against certain diseases and health conditions. Vitamins also are antioxidants that help protect your bodies from free radical damage, which is associated with aging.

There are two types of vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins and water-soluble vitamins:

  • Fat-soluble vitamins: These vitamins do not break down in water, and if an excess amount is ingested, the additional vitamin is stored in fat tissue and the liver. Examples are vitamin A (retinol, retinaldehyde, etinoic acid), vitamin D (calciferol), vitamin E (tocopherol, tocotrienol), and vitamin K (phylloquinone).

  • Water-soluble vitamins: These break down in water and the body easily excretes any excess amount, which means that these vitamins need to be replaced often. Examples are vitamin C, B vitamins (biotin, folate, pantothenic acid, B1 (thiamin), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine) and vitamin B12 (cobalamin).
